Flora of the upper marshes (sphagnum, rosemary, sundew, cranberry, rosemary marsh, fluff)

Flora of the upper marshes (sphagnum, rosemary, sundew, cranberry, rosemary marsh, fluff)

Pripyatsky National Park

The upper marsh opens up a wonderful world of specific vegetation adapted to acidic, mineral – poor conditions and excessive moisture. The main role here is played by sphagnum mosses, which form a soft springy cover of various shades of green and brown — they set the tone for the entire landscape and contribute to the accumulation of peat. Among the mossy carpets, you can notice a sundew — a small predatory plant with droplets of sticky liquid on the leaves, luring insects. The characteristic appearance of the swamp is given by fluffy white «puffs» of fluffy, swaying in the wind. Everywhere there is wild rosemary with leathery dark green leaves and fragrant white inflorescences with an intoxicating smell. Nearby you can find rosemary marsh (its narrow leaves and pale pink flowers are easy to distinguish from other plants), and among the moss pillows in autumn you can see bright red cranberries. All this vegetation creates a unique look of the riding swamp, demonstrating amazing survival strategies in harsh conditions.
