«Polesskaya Exotica» introduces the marsh turtle – the oldest inhabitant of the Belarusian swamps, preserved in the territory of the Pripyat Polesie. This red-listed species finds its home in swampy ancient riverbeds and lakes, and chooses dry sand dunes that are well warmed by the sun for laying eggs. Once born, young animals make their way to the water – to the usual wetlandss with slow current and abundant vegetation. Today, the turtle’s existence is threatened by draining swamps, destroying nesting sites, human concerns, and illegal trapping. The tour clearly shows how important it is to preserve the Polessky landscapes – the only home for this relict species, reminding us of the value of biodiversity and the need to take care of wildlife.
