Long-lived pine

Long-lived pine

Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park

The Tree of the Great Forest. It is one of the mightiest conifers in the entire Pushcha. Its trunk diameter is over 120 cm, and its age is estimated at 350 years!

Pines of this size are rare. These pines were once held in high regard by the local population: they were used for making beehives, collecting resin, harvesting kindling, and building houses. These trees are now considered “plus” trees and are the most valuable carriers of the relict forest’s genetic information. The seeds from this pine’s cones are used to create valuable seed banks and are used as planting material in the local forest nursery.
