Tourist route «Dokudovo»

Belovezhskaya Pushcha National Park

Drained in the 1960s, the Dokudovo Marsh is a favorite feeding ground for wild ungulates. In the morning and evening, you can see bison, deer, roe deer, and wild boar grazing here, and observe birds, especially large predators. Observation towers are available for wildlife viewing and photography.

1. «Dokudovo» (52.585500, 23.791303)

The «Dokudovo» cycling and walking route is located in the southern part of Belovezhskaya Pushcha; it passes through the tract of the same name, which is located on the site of an ancient raised bog drained in the 1960s and 1970s. For a long time, this area was used by the local population as pasture and hayfields. Currently, the area is a favorite habitat for deer, wild boar, foxes, and wolves. Occasionally, you can encounter a bison here or see its tracks.

2. «Spruce» (52.582863, 23.795853)

Forests dominated by Norway spruce occupy more than 4% of the forested area in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. Spruce is common in various stands and is distinguished by its high shade tolerance. Due to the shallow location of the root system, it often suffers from windfalls and frequent fluctuations in groundwater levels. It reaches a height of 35-50 m. Individual trees live up to 300-350 years. The needles remain green for 7-9 years.

3. «Aspen» (52.582007, 23.798170).

Aspen trees reach 35 meters in height and 1 meter in diameter. They live for 80-90 years, sometimes up to 150 years. They are most often found in mixed forests in Belovezhskaya Pushcha. They produce abundant root suckers, allowing them to spread under the forest canopy and firmly hold onto the territory they occupy. Aspen leaves have very long and flexible petioles, so they sway easily—«trembling»—in the air, giving rise to many legends associated with this tree.

4. «Alder» (52.581872, 23.805392)

Black alder is the keeper of the Pushcha’s secrets. In ancient times, when the great forest was surrounded by impenetrable swamps, alder thickets conquered all the damp lowlands. Since then, as foresters say, alders have been the least disturbed vegetation complexes by humans. The “difficult” timber rarely attracted the greedy eyes of loggers, and the impenetrable wilderness remains the best refuge for animals and birds.

6. Feeding area (52.573424, 23.813399)

Near the road, a veritable canteen has been set up for forest dwellers: a feeding area for wild animals, a yard for young animals, and salt licks. Feeding is carried out during the difficult cold season. We feed the animals grain and hay harvested in the national park’s management zone. A dedicated ranger service is responsible for feeding the animals and laying out the feed.

7. Beavers (52.572741, 23.813960)

Beavers (Latin: Castor (wood)) are a genus of mammals from the order Rodentia. They are the only living representative of the family Castoridae. Beavers feed on the bark and young branches of trees, which they fell by gnawing at the base. They reach a body length of 130 cm and weigh up to 32 kg. They can swim underwater for up to 750 m, staying there for 4-5 minutes or longer. Beavers inhabit the banks of slow-moving forest rivers, streams, and lakes. They build dams from fallen trees and brush, raising the water level in front of them. They also create channels through which they float logs to the dam and swim for more material. Beavers build two types of dwellings: burrows and lodges. Beavers spend the night in their huts, store supplies for the winter, and hide from predators.
